This little book was written by an indignant lifelong oarsman who started rowing in his schooldays. Indignant because the rowers in the fleet have not been credited with any role in Athens' victory over the Persians in 490 B.C. Nor have light-armed troops been given their due share in the glory. It has all been usurped in favour of the heavy-armed hoplites at Marathon.
