Eye-opening and hard-hitting, Dr. Minor puts the political activities of the right-wing in a new perspective and explains how liberal responses can enable religious addiction. He applies contemporary understandings of addiction to the extreme Christian right-wing in the U.S., concluding that religion functions as a process addiction for them. Crucial is its obsession with human depravity, the ultimate expression of low self-worth. A "high" of righteousness eliminates a sense of personal responsibility for their teachings, actions, and their actions' damage to others. Religious addiction, he notes, often covers sexual addiction. The current right-wing obsession with political campaigns and victories is the stronger fix the addiction demands to cover growing fears of failure. Often the responses of liberals have been like those of enablers in an addict's family who through their reactions prevent the addict from hitting bottom. Arguing about religion, for example, promotes the addiction.
