Published to coincide with the exhibition at the Hunt Museum Limerick, this book is the first to chronicle the work of Limerick silversmiths and goldsmiths. It draws extensively on new research to highlight the achievements of almost forgotten craftspeople. The origin in Limerick of many of Ireland's greatest treasures, such as the incomparable Ardagh chalice, suggests skilled smiths at work in the area for many centuries. Throughout the history of Limerick, goldsmiths and silversmiths contributed to civic life, at least four serving as mayor. This book will bring a solid appreciation of the work of makers such as John Bucknor, Robert Smith, Collins Brehon, Maurice Fitzgerald and the peerless Joseph Johns. Photographed are rare, precious ecclesiastical pieces of both Roman Catholic and Anglican traditions, impressive civic, ceremonial and commemorative pieces, as well as domestic and personal plate, ranging from a splendid soup tureen to a modest teaspoon. The silver and gold trophies and medals won by generations of Limerick sportspeople are uniquely showcased here, having been won in contests in places as diverse as Cardiff, Calcutta, Croke Park and Clogheen.
