Peter Wynn Kirby holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge.

Dr Kirby embarked on Japan-based fieldwork as a Monbusho scholar in Tokyo University’s Department of Cultural Anthropology. Then, from 2002, he spent several years as a tenured assistant professor at Ritsumeikan in Japan and held a research post at Tokyo University. Concurrently, from 2006 to 2008, he was based in Paris conducting nuclear research at the Centre de Recherches sur le Japon, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), where he remains a research fellow.

Through 2004, Dr Kirby also returned to the UK each winter to lecture on the 'cultures' of global environmentalism in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Cambridge.
