I am a cultural historian of central and eastern Europe, specializing in postwar Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Polish, and East German history. My current research combines this focus with a deep theoretical interest in the anthropology of revolutions, examining the evolution of democratic political culture in Czechoslovakia from the launching of perestroika in 1985 to the dissolution of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic in 1992, with emphasis on the experience of a revolutionary break in 1989. While I work primarily on the contemporary history of East Central Europe, I have also published articles on Czech-Roma relations in the 1920s and on Macedonian nationalism. I teach courses on various aspects of twentieth-century central and eastern European history.
