It is always a great pleasure to read Austin's work. I was impressed by the wit, the satire and the beautiful language of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma. This early novel shares these same qualities, but it distinguishes itself in many other ways. Catherine is not a typical heroine of Austin's style. She is not extremely clever, not so beautiful, nor has she any accomplishments in music, literature or drawing. The plot is not designed as a triangular love story. Even their love is ignited by the heroine, not the hero. Another obvious difference is that the writer's views and comments are interwoven into the novel. From time to time, the writer comes forward and speak out some of our heroine's characteristics, other writers' possible approaches of handling this novel and views about literature and novels. Altogether, it is a delightful novel.
