IMPAC的獲奬作印象中讀過的都沒有失望的，英國新銳作傢Jon McGregor的這本亦然。小說的文藝氣極重，卻又極其down-to-earth，寫的是社會底層一群酗酒嗑藥的流浪漢，他們的故事裏有自暴自棄的墮落，有無可奈何的傷痛，破碎的行文書寫破碎的人生，疏離的敘事喚起深厚的悲憫

與處女作If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things類似，Even the Dogs也運用瞭多重人物視角，非綫性敘事以及詩意的語言風格。不同的是，前者展示瞭McGregor’s lyrical attentiveness to the moments of unremarkable beauty in the minute workings of inner-city daily life，後者examining the marginalized underbelly of contemporary inner-city life: heroin addicts, runaway teenagers and army veterans.
