Elena Garro, writer, poet, journalist and playwright was born in Puebla, Mexico, in 1916. In 1937 she married Octavio Paz. Her first novel, Los recuerdos del porvenir, about the Cristero war, won the Xavier Villaurrutia Award in 1963. Her ample literary output includes novels, short stories, plays and filmscripts. Her three volumes of short stories, Andamos huyendo Lola, La semana de colores and El accidente y otros cuentos ineditos are paradigms of Mexican fiction, with the psychological depth of their plots, the mastery implicit in the apparent simplicity of their style and the patent hints of autobiography that verge on nightmare and black humor.
