Peter Marconi was the "quintessential" friend in need. He was also gay. Was this why he was killed? The San Francisco media focused on this fact, causing pain to his family and partner. Yet, for Inspector Jeremy Smith and Assistant Inspector Fred Wong, there were also the disapproving brother-in-law, the missing brother, Tommy, and the problems between them and older brother William. Finally, there were the missing dog and the mysterious animal dealer. Smith is aided with this lead by his girlfriend, Marie Broussard. She, like the victim, was passionate about animals. The case would change all of their lives.
