College football has a way of bringing young men together. And I don't just mean in a violent collision or pile-up in the end zone. Collisions notwithstanding, many of these young men from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds often bond together to form permanent friendships that often transcend the transient relationships of just being teammates. Football often is a metaphor for the struggle these young men face in life, during and after they graduate. It prepares them to accept the many challenges, rejections, and hardships they face as they travel through the many stages of their progression, from student to family man.(After being slammed into by a 250 pound behemoth intent on changing their body parts, they learn to virtually laugh at adversity and fear few day-to-day problems.) Football teaches one discipline. Work ethic. The ability to cope with stress. Promotes teamwork and good sportsmanship. To win with grace and lose with even more grace. Tests one's mettle. And more often than not, a confident attitude, a can't fail, positive approach in reacting to the pressures of exams in college; problems that arise carving out a business career; raising a family; or contributing to the good and welfare of society.
