It s 1938 in Tyrone City, U.S.A., where Ace Confidential is set. Meet Billie Ballentyne, the wise-cracking girl Friday who runs the office of True Ingraham, a down on his luck private detective. Somebody has tried to kill her. Another somebody is trying to lay a murder rap on True. A typical day of Ace Confidential Detection Services. Intersecting plots from True s investigation of a nymphomaniac wife who s cheating, to a woman who hires True to find out who may be trying to harm her, to Billie s investigation of Max Schultz, an international arms manufacturer who is either an outcast Nazi or a devoted one bent on some nefarious plot against the U.S. keep the action moving and the suspense high. Caught up in all of this are some of Tyrone City s most distinctive characters. Like Joey Noah, crime reporter for the Bugle and Billie s sometime boyfriend. He s a guy who will do anything for a scoop. There s suave gangster type Harry Drake, whose smile makes Billie weak at the knees, but could he be behind the plot to kill her? Complicating matters is the lady of many names, Gwyneth Rake. Or is it Schultz? Or Archer? Is she a frightened potential victim or an out-and-out psychopathic murderer? Helping Billie to cope with it all are Vera and Faye, her best friends. They share lunch, gossip about music, movies, and fashion, and sob stories about their misadventures with those exasperating fools called...men.
