This book is a masterpiece of writing and makes us think of Aesop and Hans Christian Anderson mixed in with a little Grimm's. It is one of the first books by John Anthony Walker and does not have the sting of his other books and remains somewhat pure by comparison to his "Elbringe" series of books, not to mention his "Black Forest and Other Tales," which is downright creepy. "Beartown" is a collection of "stories" that are mainly for grownups but can be read to children or "older" children as well. The reason we say "older" children is because somehow these subjects relate to morals and ethics of adults and not children. Children will appreciate them but be more confused by them. Adults will appreciate them and be less confused because they read them. Adults should read them and children should wait until they are old enough to appreciate them. There is no foul language in this book, unlike the other books by this author and this book feels distinctly "old world," by comparison. For a refresher, John Anthony Walker has only written so many books like this one, and it calls to question, if after this book, he lost his "innocence." There are over a dozen wonderful "fairy tales" for us to peruse in this volume of works and they are breathtaking as well as moralizing for courage and purity of heart and mind. Take a refresher course on what it is like to be human and not of this modern day world of investment strategies and growth hormones.
