This volume brings together twenty-five articles in honor of John E. Woods, representing his research and teaching especially on the later middle and early modern periods of Islamic history. The history of the later middle period (1250-1500) in particular is still one of the least developed areas within Islamic studies. This volume reflects Woods' special interest in this time, and attempts to shed much needed light on several aspects of the Mongol, Timurid, Safavid, Mamluk, and early Ottoman periods, including the internal political and cultural dynamics of the late medieval Islamic societies of the Nile-to-Oxus region, the interactions of the Turco-Mongol nomadic dynasties with their sedentary neighbors and subjects, the complex relationship between historiography, politics and political thought during these periods, and the transition from medieval to early modern societies in the Islamic world. The volume also includes an introduction on the life and work of John E. Woods and an extensive topical index.
