哈代描寫風景真是好，有種純淨與高遠。還需細細體會。小說本身是通過情節發展來展現人物性格的。模模糊糊地，看到穿紅衣的士兵，輕率不羈，陰沉執著的農場主，沉穩可靠吹長笛的有些文化的農民，還有那些遠處的農民們，善良好心、笨拙簡單。那時候那地方的人宗教感多強，活在宗教中，有引領有原則有畏懼。女主莽撞衝動，愛過年輕英俊的軍官，最終end up with a reliable 一直為他付齣的人。
