Macpherson的书带有浓重的意识形态色彩，不过对于洛克文本的把握确实非常精细，而且对于洛克两种不同状态的区分决定性地影响了之后的分析，无论是剑桥学派还是施特劳斯学派。不过，财产问题上，Macpherson的把握偏离了洛克的分析重点。他将这些思想家的矛盾和不一贯都归咎于17世纪英格兰社会意见，然而17世纪英格兰的社会性质能否被确定为资本主义，本身就值得怀疑。在这一点上，Laslett的批评虽然尖锐，却戳到了要害。对于自然状态发展论与霍布斯的比较，无限获取的动力，以及《政府论》的平等者与《教育片论》培养理性自由公民张力如何处理，有待深入。

C. B. 麦克弗森（Crawford Brough Macpherson，1911—1987），负有盛名的加拿大政治学家，曾求学于多伦多大学和伦敦政治经济学院，后执教于多伦多大学。麦克弗森著作不丰，但均为经典，《占有性个人主义的政治理论：从霍布斯到洛克》（1962）、《自由民主的生命与时代》（1977）等作品对当代政治哲学理论发展影响深远。

This seminal work by political philosopher C.B. Macpherson was first published by the Clarendon Press in 1962, and remains of key importance to the study of liberal-democratic theory half-a-century later. In it, Macpherson argues that the chief difficulty of the notion of individualism that underpins classical liberalism lies in what he calls its "possessive quality" - "its conception of the individual as essentially the proprietor of his own person or capacities, owing nothing to society for them." Under such a conception, the essence of humanity becomes freedom from dependence on the wills of others; society is little more than a system of economic relations; and political society becomes a means of safeguarding private property and the system of economic relations rooted in property. As the New Statesman declared: "It is rare for a book to change the intellectual landscape. It is even more unusual for this to happen when the subject is one that has been thoroughly investigated by generations of historians...Until the appearance of Professor Macpherson's book, it seemed unlikely that anything radically new could be said about so well-worn a topic.
