这是让马里亚斯真正开始赢得国际声誉的小说，也是我到目前为止读过他的作品中“有效事件”最少的一本。文体风格和叙述方式比前一部The Man of Feeling都有长足进步，好几个场景的细节描写都让我想起穆齐尔的句子。小说中缺乏生气的牛津小镇也是重要的角色，几个主要人物身上所笼罩的衰败气质似乎来自周围的环境，又与他们的过去息息相关。和之后的作品不同，马里亚斯在这本书中留出了很多模糊的空间，鬼魅般的暗影挥之不去，仿佛万灵皆亡，到结尾处，无名叙述者在短短两年多后却深感时空变换后的疲惫和虚空，所有的谜团倒不重要了。
