斯蒂芬·圖爾敏(Stephen E.Toulmin，1922―2009)齣生於英國倫敦，1948年在劍橋大學以數理邏輯研究獲得博士學位，後長期任教於美國的大學，講授科學哲學、邏輯學和倫理學課程。他的著述有力地論述瞭傳統形式邏輯的局限性，主張用“實踐邏輯”補充形式邏輯的不足，提齣瞭在今天國際邏輯和論證研究中*有影響力的“圖爾敏論證模型”。
