Celie is a poor black woman whose letters tell the story of 20 years of her life, beginning at age 14 when she is being abused and raped by her father and attempting to protect her sister from the same fate, and continuing over the course of her marriage to "Mister," a brutal man who terrorizes her. Celie eventually learns that her abusive husband has been keeping her sister's letters from her and the rage she feels, combined with an example of love and independence provided by her close friend Shug, pushes her finally toward an awakening of her creative and loving self.

讀完《寵兒》之後讀《紫色》，隻能打四星。《寵兒》中的人物、對話和心理都恰如其分，讀《紫色》便常常覺得“假”，從敘述中跳齣來。

评分以書信體的格式生動形象的刻畫瞭黑人女性在種族歧視和男性壓迫下尋找自己，尋找幸福的過程。並為女性的解放指齣瞭一條自己的路。
评分看其他人的評價，對從小受父親虐待且沒讀過幾天書的黑人女孩Celie的英語水平不抱期待，結果發現那日記寫得比我還磕巴，我實在沒法忍受瞭。最終找瞭中文電子書，總算把故事讀完瞭。
