What is it that lurks in the Dragon's Sea?
For centuries, natives believed that undersea monsters dwelt there, lying in wait to swallow unwary invaders. What else could account for the utter disappearance of entire fishing boats and their crews? And in such astonishing numbers? And without a trace?
Some years before Charles Berlitz wrote his internationally successful Bermuda Triangle, he'd begun researching a section of the Pacific known only as the Dragon's Sea.
Berlitz, the explainer of the inexplicable, discovered that the disappearances went well beyond fishing boats. In fact, his research revealed that lost craft of all sizes had vanished within the Dragon's Triangle. Tankers - one over 200,000 tons; military ships; armed nuclear submarines; research and scientific expeditions; fish processing factories - hundreds of ships sailed into the Triangle and vanished……
*Without any trace of shipwreck flotsam
*In calm seas
*Without any distress message
*With few survivors
The numbers are overwhelming. And the disppearances were significant enough for Japan to declare the area a danger zone.
Airplane, too, were affected by the mysterious pull of the Dragon's Triangle. Planes disappeared, including three U.S. military aircraft in a period of ten days, and many pilots who flew through the air space of the Triangle reported malfunctioning instruments, strange mists, and an acceleration of time. Like Japan, the U.S. Air Force flagged the Dragon's Triangle as an area of continuing concern.
Bordered on two sides by the great gulfs in the ocean floor and trenches plunging respectively five and eight miles deep, the Triangle waters form three-sided waves, as though the very ocean is signaling a confluence of strong and ineluctable powers.
What underlies the mytery of the Dragon's Triangle? What forces are responsible for the staggering number of ships, planes, and crews unaccountably lost within its boundaries?
Charles Berlitz, the master of the unexplained, casts his penetrating eye on this phenomenon and offers new insight into the strange and dramatic riddle of The Dragon's Triangle, one of the truly great natural mysteries of our world.
*Of the thirteen documented Russian submarines lost in the Triangle, eight were nuclear, with arms capabilities of up to 126 atomic warheads. Could volcanic turbulence within the Triangle's Ring of Fire cause undreamed-of devastation in the Pacific?
*Why was this section of the Pacif designated a "Danger Zone" by the Japanese government?
*Why did the United States Air Force formally express concern about aircraft disappearances over the same area?
*What causes the ocean currents in the Dragon's Sea to create three-sided, triangular waves?
*Why is there never flotsam - the normal signs of a shipwreck - when a vessel vanished within the Triangle?
*Of the hundreds of ships lost within the Triangle, why was there only one radio message of disaster - the single word SINKING?
*How could ships simply disappear without a trace within the Triangle, with no sign of storms?
*Of the few surviving crew members among the thousands lost, why have none been able to offer an explanation of what happened?
*Why do pilots flying over the Triangle report strange mists and a disorienting sense of accelerated time?
*Do the two undersea trenches - one five miles deep, the other eight miles deep - that form two sides of the Triangle have any effect on currents within the Dragon's Sea?
Charles Berlitz, whose Bermuda Triangle stunned millions of readers, now reveals the secrets of another, more menacing, infinitely more dangerous body of water on the other side of the world. Large and small ships, and civilian and military aircraft, have fallen victim to the Dragon's Triangle. You'll find out why in this compelling and exciting examination of one of the greatest natural mysteries of the world.
Charles Berlitz was born in New York City. He is a graduate of Yale University and a grandson of Maximillian Berlitz, founder of the Berlitz Language Schools. He speaks twenty-five languages with varying degrees of fluency and is considered one of the fifteen most eminent linguists in the world. His interest in archaeology and underwater exploration led to his writing The Bermuda Triangle and Atalantis. Mr. Berlitz was awarded the Dag Hammarskj?ld International Prize for Nonfiction. He lives in Florida.
