评分距第一次看电影（首部让我哭到惨不行的片）不过五年，Hubert Selby Jr的同名小说却是刚补上。因肺病依赖止痛片和海洛因的Hubert，对所谓药物附着的“安魂”之感，体验切肤。与电影相似，小说从头至尾，并嗅不出强烈的道德审判味道，亦没有任何屈就傲慢的上帝视角（电影里有）。“And so the city became even more savage with the passing of each day..."继续为这残酷的戏谑动容，无论在70s的Bronx设定里，还是Aronofsky影片中90s的Coney Island——"You lookin good man… Watch you do, change embalmers?"
