1954年3月生于南京，祖籍福建同安。是当代著名作家茹志鹃的次女。1955年刚满一岁便随父母进入上海，从此，具有着说不清、道不白的“双重身份”：既是地地道道的“上海人”，也永远只是上海的“外来妹”。1961年入淮海中路小学，1967年入向明中学读初中，并开始发表作品。1969年（15岁）初中没毕业就到安徽省北部（淮北）五河县农村插队。1972年（18岁）考入江苏省徐州地区文工团，在乐队拉大提琴，并参加一些创作活动。

“文革”结束后，1978年调入上海中国儿童福利会《儿童时代》杂志社任编辑，1980年曾到北京中国作协文学讲习所学习。这年，她因在《北京文学》（1980年第6期）上发表《雨，沙沙沙》而引人注目。1987年调入上海作家协会创作室任专业作家，后担任中国作协理事，上海作协副主席等职。
