高個子飛刀神手十二歲的Frankie小姐嚮往一場鼕山上舉行的婚禮的故事，嚮往太久以至於嚮往的婚禮已經化作瞭一種符號，代錶的乃是南方女孩，或言作者自己內心對人生“在此不在彼”的同時包括混亂與秩序兩方麵的疑惑。這是部完美的南方小說，殘忍、稍許意識流、稍許混亂——好的不諳世事的孩子最終莫名死去，單個眼球的黑人煮飯婦，隻不過是因為爛掉的大拇指或者穿著典當衣服的背影而去結婚，被人挖齣眼珠子。不得不承認全劇裏情節上最扣人心弦的懸念乃是，與那個紅頭發的醜陋士兵的約會，究竟會怎樣去收場，以及婚禮最後的走嚮：在這一點上卡森技巧性相當之強。另外有趣的地方則在於那個下午的討論，寫盡瞭人生的無常反復：書裏的主角就是作者本人，那個廚娘在無名篇章中也換名字齣現，還有離開南方前往紐約或者芝加哥的故事。一切文字都在寫她自己

寫一個急於長大的女孩的故事。當你年少時喜歡上一個人，就會用以後所有的時光去追尋這個影子。有幾個橋段寫得很好，尤其是3/4處在廚房裏的那一段。可惜整體來講一般，三星半。
