故事很簡單，一個因醜陋而無容身之處的人，先是被當怪物展覽後被遺棄，倫敦醫院的醫生幫助瞭他，其遭遇故事被登上報紙，民公捐款，在醫院住下，甚至女王看望他。他嘗試瞭正常人的活動。最後試圖以正常人的睡姿死去。文字通俗易懂（小學六年級水平），展示愛？還是人的憐憫？還是象人努力追求正常生活？這個故事如果當廣播來聽，或許有些冷酷害怕。

在滬江上聽的有聲書，文字非常簡單，讓我不禁懷疑是縮寫版。內容更像是一個童話，黑暗的部分甚少提及，一切都顯得簡單美好（從而感覺故事軟綿綿的），直至象人的意外死亡。
