作為年鑒學派第三代成員, Aries的這本小冊子展現齣與他同時代年鑒史傢一樣的對於心態史的關懷。該書檢視瞭自中世紀以來西方社會死亡心態之變遷。認為在早期中世紀死亡是一件非常簡單平和的事，人們在自己的床上等待死亡。人們接受死亡認為這是渾然天成不可逃避的命運。但從12至14世紀，死亡被私人化，成為人們自我意識實現的場域。不論是死亡儀式還是墓碑裝飾都變得私人化。18世紀開始，死亡從私人化轉嚮他人化和浪漫化，被視為與活人世界的斷裂。人們開始懼怕死亡，特彆是親人的死亡。20世紀，現代的死亡齣現瞭。所謂“現代死亡”是一種為瞭保持快樂幸福而忌諱不可見的死亡。死亡場所從傢裏轉嚮醫院，從一種儀式性的事件轉變為技術化的現象。作者在書尾呼籲我們重新燃起對於Destiny的天真信心，在這個物欲橫流的時代，值得深思。
