環境史經典。。用Richard White的話說，一般讀者會以為這是城市史或經濟史，但是它本質上是環境史。跟他上一本書一樣，背後的大主題都是資本主義如何改變自然。批判和分析資本主義，這是美國環境史的特色之一。 關於芝加哥與東北部的聯係、鐵路的作用、榖物、木材和肉類的生産流動，非常細緻，對我自己的研究有很大的啓發。不過他的寫作風格有點散，讀起來很費力。。沒有時間細讀，等過瞭考試後，要再讀一遍。
