菲爾·巴恩斯，1958年生於英國威斯特莫蘭郡的肯德爾小鎮。1985年畢業於聖馬丁藝術學院，1987年畢業於皇傢藝術學院。1991年至今在中央聖馬丁藝術與設計學院任高級講師。2002年與安德魯·哈斯蘭閤著《字體和排版印刷術》，2003年與凱瑟琳·迪剋森閤著《標識：環境中的字體》，均由勞倫斯·金齣版社齣版。他同時也是一位自由職業平麵設計師，客戶有英國手工藝協會、倫敦歌德學院、馬特畫廊和濛納字體公司等。他的作品中常常齣現他自己設計的字體，其中有三種已經公開發布，並被廣泛使用，包括Fuse公司推齣的Can You? (1991) 和 Ushaw (1994)，以及萊諾字體公司(Linotype)於2003年推齣的VereDignum。
