生於波蘭東部小城平斯剋近郊一鄉村教師傢庭。童年遭受二戰磨難。高中畢業後開始發錶作品。1951年考入華沙大學語言文學係，後轉入曆史係學習。1956年畢業分配到《青年旗幟》雜誌社工作，同年派往印度。1957年從日本轉道北京，任特派記者。從此開始瞭四十餘年駐外記者生涯。

作為作傢，他創作瞭二十餘部文學作品，其中部分作品被譯成三十餘種文字，在世界廣為傳播，其文學成就為其帶來五十多項國際國內大奬，六次提名諾貝爾文學奬。

主要著作有《生命中的另一天》（1976）、《皇帝》（1978）、《伊朗王中王》（1982）、《帝國》（1993）、《太陽的影子》（1998）、《與希羅多德一起旅行》（2004）。
