Josef Trappel is Professor for media policy and media economics the University of Salzburg, Austria. He conducts research in the fields of media and democracy, media policy and media economics.

Werner A. Meier is the Director of SwissGIS, the Swiss Centre for Studies on the Global Information Society at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. His work concentrates on democratic media governance.

Contributing to the debate on the role of the mass media in contemporary democracies, a key focus of this volume is to question how to monitor the contribution of mass media to democracy, and to focus on the initiatives, achievements and flaws of media monitoring.Moving beyond previous studies which have tended to focus on legal issues related to media freedom alone, this volume takes a broader approach covering media structure, ownership, policy, economics, company conduct, law and regulationall important indicators on how well the mass media serve contemporary democracies. Throughout, the volume strikes a balance between monitoring initiatives with an academic, governmental, and non-governmental origin.
