For more than seventeen years, Lin Kong, a devoted and ambitious doctor, has been in love with an educated, clever, modern woman, Manna Wu. But back in the traditional world of his home village lives the wife his family chose for him when he was young. Every year he visits her in order to ask, again and again, for a divorce. In a culture in which the ancient ties of tradition and family still hold sway and where adultery discovered by the Party can ruin lives forever, Lin's passionate love is stretched ever more taut by the passing years. Every summer, his compliant wife agrees to a divorce but then backs out. This time, Lin promises, will be different. "Waiting" charms and startles with its depiction of a China that remains hidden to Western eyes even as it moves with its piercing vision of the universal complications of love.
作者簡介
哈金（Ha Jin）
本名金雪飛，1956年生於遼寜省，曾在中國人民解放軍中服役五年。1982年畢業於黑龍江大學英語係，在校主攻英美文學，1984年獲山東大學英美文學碩士學位。1985年赴美留學，並於1992年獲布蘭迪斯大學（Brandeis University）博士學位。現任教於美國波士頓大學（Boston University）。
1996年，獲“弗蘭納裏·奧康納小說奬”（《小鎮奇人異事》）
1997年，獲“海明威基金會/筆會奬”（《好兵》）
1999年，獲“美國國傢圖書奬”（《等待》）
2000年，獲“筆會/福剋納奬”（《等待》）
2002年，獲湯森德小說奬（《新郎》）
2004年，《紐約時報》十大好書（《戰廢品》）
2005年，獲“筆會/福剋納奬”（《戰廢品》）
2006年，獲“美國藝術與科學研究院會員”稱號
