This volume is not, in the usual sense of the term, a 'reader,' but a collection of original research papers by a group of anthropologists and sociologists who have been engaged in studies of everyday, naturally occurring social interaction... While none of the papers is a prouct of directly collaborative research...the authors of these papers do share an intellectual perspective and periods of association together. A center basis for their associate was their involvement in Professor Harold Garfinkel's research in 'ethnomethodology.' Garfinkel's work on the phenomenological structure of ordinary settings of social activity provided and continues to provide an enormous intellectual stimulus for our researches.
