故事從一本紀念文集開始。1991年Eric的父親過世,幾位父親童年時期的誠摯的舊交,為父親編纂瞭一本紀念集。書中重建一群男孩在戰後颱灣的青春記憶。Eric拿到這本書時,注視照片良久,父親當年到美國時,纔18歲,一晃眼他們一傢人便已在美國生活瞭數十載,立足於美國社會。Eric名副其實成為人們眼中的「華裔美籍第二代」、「ABC」、與外黃內白的「香蕉」一族。
華裔美籍身分對於Eric的成長歷程,是難以形容的,許多認同、種族、身分的問題,在父親過世之後更令他深思。他以其洞察力與悲憫心,坦承剖析自己的矛盾心態,刨根究底,追尋一條自由之路。
