In a country known for tight political control and ineffectual courts, Environmental Litigation in China unravels how everyday justice works: how judges make decisions, why lawyers take cases, and how international influence matters. It is a readable account of how the leadership's mixed signals and political ambivalence play out on the ground - propelling some, such as the village doctor who fought a chemical plant for more than a decade, even as others back away from risk. Yet this remarkable book shows that even in a country where expectations would be that law wouldn't much matter, environmental litigation provides a sliver of space for legal professionals to explore new roles and, in so doing, probe the boundary of what is politically possible.

果然有political science背景的學者寫起書來比純文化研究的要看起來爽的多，文筆生動，很有深度
评分同樣關於中國環境政治，political ambiguity在政策執行中被認為是造成偏差的原因，在另一種敘事中卻成瞭可能默許新製度發展的背景，也許模糊本身就挺模糊的。作者基本上不認為環境訴訟乃至環境政治在中國能起到在蘇聯的那種作用，好像也很少有人有這種預期。

评分終於有機會把16年夏天做的環境公益訴訟的研究寫一下瞭。看到評論裏說Stern“這種寫法雖然詳實，立論往往過於溫吞，少瞭能夠刺穿現實錶象的力度。溫開水雖解渴，但總是意猶未盡。” 非常同意。或許這也是我漸漸疏遠學術圈的原因瞭吧。Chris
