完全不熟悉这段古代史，以为会很陌生，但是作者文字很美，架构新颖，结果竟然在不知不觉中读完。这本书写作上用好多同义词反义词(感觉应该再读一遍的????)；架构上是用了建筑艺术、基督徒、征服战争、比较现当代影响等几个方面来介绍罗马帝国历史。读这本书初衷是为了补充Starz电视剧《Spartacus》的背景(其实是后续)资料，本来看电视剧就够恨没落的共和罗马，读完这本更恨罗马帝国。我读到一半，吐槽说恨一切帝国，什么罗马了，大英了，Galaxy Far Away了(wait)...而作者在最后一章竟然就真的比较了罗马帝国与一战前英国、二战前意大利与德国；他提到，尼禄是墨索里尼是希特勒，可能还有些斯大林。这里持有的不动声色的批判，让我有了非常心怡的阅读体验，和对历史略为悲观的认知。

作者在这本小册子里，简短但有力的回顾了，罗马帝国时期的历史，从疯狂的征服战争，到有序的罗马总督的统治，再到残酷的对基督教的残害历史，最后到对现代的启示，对大不列颠帝国，法西斯以及当代的电影，都有独到的，清晰的点评 罗马对人们的吸引力就是如此，从头到尾的，彻底...
