Butler traveled through the area to be inundated following the implementation of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China, photographing people, villages, bridges, temples, homes, factories, and landscape. The photographs, all b&w, are presented in full-page format in this oversize (12x13.5") volume, which, though handsome, is a mournful remembrance of an area fabled for its history and scenery. The photographs are accompanied by a text by Butler chronicling the stories of

the people she visited before, during, and after the dam was built.
