In Bowersock's analysis of Julian's religious revolution, the emperor's ardent espousal of a lost cause is seen to have made intolerable demands upon pagans, Jews, and Christians alike.

英文中近几十年来，Julian的传记不多。这本正文不到120页，对于只活了32年的罗马皇帝，而且不想渲染，也就差不多了。作者对史料常有辨析，只是我不熟悉此前的研究，所以没法说作者的突破和贡献。文字比较讲究，和作者推崇吉本恐怕有些关系。居然看到极少被使用的ululation一词（96页）！对Julian没有太多理想化，也没有过多猜测。结尾期待有一点点高潮，有一丁点的感慨和抒怀，却没有，足见作者的节制。
