Linguistics in Africa is conventionally taught via European and American models. This book seeks to add to this approach by focusing on linguistics in Africa. Covering the major themes that are dealt with in university courses and making extensive use of linguistic symbols and diagrams, the book is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate linguistics students in South Africa and Africa as a whole, as well as at students of African studies worldwide. Its topics include general descriptions of languages in east and southern Africa, the nature of languages in contact and in competition, language in education, and the need for government intervention in linguistic issues.
