刚看了开头几页就眼前一亮。好久没读过写得这么漂亮的理论书了。

作者的思路让我重新认识了categorical和protean这两个词。只能回顾，没法总结。Being modern entails a mask for authentic self-expression; being human entails locating the authenticating imperative in the weightiness of life.

莱昂内尔·特里林(Lionel Trilling, 1905-1975)，20世纪美国著名批评家，生前为美国哥伦比亚大学著名教授。他继承阿诺德、利维斯以来的批评传统，侧重从社会历史、道德心理的角度评论文学和文化，被称为20世纪中期美国年青一代的思想导师，对当代批评影响甚大。其代表作还有《自由的想象》、《弗洛伊德与我们的文化危机》、《反对自我》、《超越文化》等。

Laing, suggesting the contradictions and ironies to which the ideals of sincerity and authenticity give rise, most especially in contemporary life.
