黃崇嘏，臨邛人。12歲父母亡故後，傢境清寒，與老保姆相依為生。成年後常女扮男裝，四處遊曆。公元888年，因故被誣為縱火人，寫詩嚮知州周庠辯冤，得其賞識。獲釋後，經周庠推舉，代理司戶參軍一職。周庠又欲將其女嫁予黃崇嘏為妻。黃無奈修書一封，錶明“女身”，並嚮周庠辭職。歸鄉後，守貧而終。金元雜劇《春桃記》、明代徐渭雜劇《女狀元辭凰得鳳》，均記黃崇嘏中狀元之事，為《女駙馬》之原型。
