An important study of the impact of fair trade movement, as the 'benign face' of globalisation, on commodity producers, using as a case study, a community of coffee-growers in Costa Rica gives a multi-faceted and complex picture of fair trade and its impact: not as the benevolent dispensation of high-minded Western innovators, but as a way of working the land and sustaining a community that, if anything, pre-existed fair trade and the ideals it strives for topical and intriguing account of a movement that needs to be more carefully examined.
