Vincente M. Lechuga reveals how the recent expansion of the for-profit higher education market leads to fundamental questions regarding the purpose and function of these institutions. This new study provides a framework for understanding faculty roles and responsibilities, through a series of in-depth interviews with faculty members from several for-profit institutions. Lechuga works from a cultural framework, exploring the attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions of faculty work, with special consideration given to faculty members' non-tenure-track status, participation in decision making, and academic freedom. He introduces a new component to the cultural framework, which illustrates how the close ties between for-profit institutions, employers and the market affect the nature of faculty work.
