When Carl's beloved dog Mooch died in an accident, his best friend Gary was there to help him. Right away he started coming over with his puppy Dumpling, trying to cheer Carl up. So when Gary starts getting mad for no reason, accusing Carl of trying to steal Dumpling away, Carl is worried for his friend. He thinks maybe Gary is jealous of how much Dumpling likes him. But when Gary's dad and Carl's mom become closer friends, Carl learns that Gary never knew his own mother at all. Carl decides to help Gary face his loss, with a little help from Mooch. A Gift from Mooch is a touching story of childhood loss, and how friendship helps to overcome it.
