李安宅（1900-1985），人类学家和藏学家。河北省迁安县人。字仁斋，笔名任责。1926年燕京大学社会学系毕业，后赴美国深造。1938年赴甘肃拉卜楞寺对藏传佛教进行实地调查，后任教于成都华西大学。1947年到1949年在美英从事研究工作。1950年进藏任教。1963年任教于四川师范学院。1985年逝世。一生专治民族学、宗教学、社会学、藏学的研究，颇有成绩。宗教方面的专著有《藏族宗教史之实地研究》、《拉卜楞----李安宅的调查报告》、《宗教与边疆建设》等。

本书是作者对甘南藏区藏传佛教格鲁派（黄教）六大寺院之一的拉卜楞寺进行了三年的实地考察的成果，是国内外公认为通过实地考察和社会调查而撰写的有关藏族宗教史的第一部杰作。本书在介绍藏族文化背景与历史概况的基础上，着重介绍藏族在信仰佛教以前的信仰和早期佛教；格鲁派——革新或当权的佛教；格鲁派寺院——拉卡楞寺。这部著作虽然是半个世纪以前的旧作，但它是我国对藏传佛教进行实地考察的一个开端，标志着一个时代的学术水平。
