3.5/5 Moser takes us on a brief yet fascinating tour of the developmental trajectory of contemporary Putonghua, a hybrid language of which 1 billion speakers worldwide take for granted. Framing language as both politically malleable and surprisingly robust and anarchic, Moser reveals to us how our identity is the result of battles fought before us.
