In the early twentieth century, American attitudes to traditional models of education began to shift away from the conventional European model towards a more goal-oriented and purposeful new American model. This book traces the history of this shift, highlighting commonly-held negative assumptions about the value of studying abroad, bound up in the idea that not only was the American model superior, but also that traveling abroad to study was the preserve of the idle rich female whose education was regarded as essentially purposeless, as opposed to the functional and career-focused education prized in America. An extensive historical and rhetorical analysis of international study in the US, this book contributes to a new understanding of how today's situation has come about, assessing the role of gender in the development and maintenance of the marginality of study abroad.
