Oddly, the star of this darkly comic novel is not the master tanner, who plods along like the naive easterner in Stephen Crane's "Blue Hotel," but the tanner's wife, a sensuous and level-headed woman who sees the West for what it is: a land of violence, yes, but also a land of prairies, mountains, and deserts signifying opportunity.
