Tim O'Brien於1946年齣生於明尼蘇達州。 O'Brien12歲時，全傢（包括一個弟弟一個妹妹）移居到明尼蘇達州的沃辛頓。這個地方對於O'Brien的想象力和作為一個作傢的早期發展有很大影響。這個城市坐落於明尼蘇達州西部的 Okabena 湖的旁邊，這個地方也充當其某些作品的背景，如在其作品The Things They Carried中。

1968年，取得得麥卡利斯特學院政治科學學士學位。同年被選入伍並被派送越南，O'Brien的服役期為1969—1970，期間他在美軍步兵師一個參與過美萊村大屠殺的一個排服役。當O'Brien所在的軍隊到達美萊村附近區域時，O'Brien說“我們不明白為什麼這個地方到處充斥敵意。我們並不知道這兒一年前曾經發生過大屠殺。我們是後來纔知道這一事實，來當我們到那兒之後，我們明白瞭”

服役期滿後，O'Brien進入哈弗大學研究生院學習，並在華盛頓郵報擔任實習生。1973年，根據其越戰經曆寫成的《如果我死在戰區》（If I Die in A Combat Zone）發錶，其寫作生涯正式開始。在其迴憶錄中，O'Brien寫到“"僅僅因為曾今在那兒待過，步兵就可以教導人們戰爭的重要性嗎？我認為不是。他所能做的是講述有關戰爭的故事”。盡管O'Brien認為探討越戰的政治性不是他的工作，但有時還是會對其提齣批判。
