Cormac McCarthy, born Charles McCarthy (born July 20, 1933 in Providence, Rhode Island), is an American novelist who has written ten novels in the Southern Gothic, western, and post-apocalyptic genres.Literary critic Harold Bloom named him as one of the four major American novelists of his time, along with Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, and Philip Roth. He is frequently compared by modern reviewers to William Faulkner and sometimes to Herman Melville.
By the author of Blood Meridian and All the Pretty Horses, Suttree is the story of Cornelius Suttree, who has forsaken a life of privilege with his prominent family to live in a dilapidated houseboat on the Tennessee River near Knoxville. Remaining on the margins of the outcast community there--a brilliantly imagined collection of eccentrics, criminals, and squatters--he rises above the physical and human squalor with detachment, humor, and dignity.

Such a depressing work about self-destruction. The problem is that it seems totally pointless. In the under-rated film "Leaving Las Vegas", at least we had a glimpse of where the hero's drunken abandon came from - the loss of his family, his anchor. But in "Suttree", we ended up not having any notion what the quiet despair was all about.
