Planning Preface; As sustainable urban development and management has become increasingly central to governments ranging from local to national in scale, examples of initiatives to implement this goal have come to have added significance and utility. This is a principal reason for preparing a new, revised edition of Integrating City Planning and Environmental Improvement. First published in 1999, the twenty-three cases that this book presents have perhaps even more value today as we move beyond general deliberations concerning the desirability of addressing environmental quality issues, and focus more on strategies to deal operationally with them. The fact that these cases include national, regional, city and neighbourhood programs results in their providing useful ideas and encouragement to those engaged in planning at each of these levels. Publishing this new, revised edition in soft cover is intended to make it more widely available to public officials and planning professionals who are concerned with resolving environmental conflicts through city planning.
