Launched in 1989, Project Galileo, NASA's most ambitious interplanetary mission, came to an end on 21 September 2003 when Galileo disintegrated in Jupiter's atmosphere, nearly nine years after it entered orbit around the planet. During this time, it made a number of startling discoveries and transmitted more than 6,000 images of Jupiter and its moons. With a selection of stunning photographs, this book explores Jupiter's moons: Io, simmering with over 100 active cauldrons; Europa, encrusted with salt-stained ice that may hide a sea; Ganymede, with its own magnetic field; and Callisto, one of the oldest and most unchanged places in our solar system; as well as Jupiter's inner moons and thirty-two minor moons. It shows that the Jovian system is like none we know. With an afterword by John R. Casani, the original project manager for the Galileo mission.
