The Face of the Fox is a classic anthropological and sociological study of the Fox American Indians (the Mesquakie) in Tama, Iowa. Frederick Gearing puts face on the peoples of this tribe, specifically dealing with the estrangement between the Fox Indians and the Westerners surrounding them. Estrangement, Gearing finds, shackles both parties, leaving them unable to connect with one another, while communication between parties will literally set both free.
